Sonic Stereotypes - The Record Spod

Sonic Stereotypes

recordspod Sonic Stereotypes The Record SpodGo into any record shop on a weekday and you’ll find The Record Spod. The Spod knows everything about his chosen love, be it Genesis, New Order or the works of Warren Zevon. To buy records by said artists simply isn’t enough. Eyeball touching sleeve, they squint with blinking mole eyes (a result of spending too long in darkened rooms leafing through old copies of Record Collector) to see if the LP they hold is that release with the slight misprint on the serial number. If it is, they’ll thrill at how this is one of only eight copies of the (financially) worthless record in existence.

Some Spods are bordering on autistic, able to tell you every single detail of the chart from 1981, when [chosen band] released their debut single. In fact, I once witnessed a Spod doing the chart from August 1962 in reverse order after I’d mentioned Joe Meek by accident.
The Spod will often be seen in a slightly grubby and unfashionable coat, filled with leaflets from various community groups and plastic bags full of random items picked up from local charity shops (”I found this ashtray that says ‘Argentina’ on it…”). The Record Spod is a well-meaning man (and yes, they’re all men, as the ladies seem to have lives) who accidentally annoys record shop owners with persistent questioning… while they’re trying serve other people. They’re infuriating and brilliant people.
