I am belatedly besotted with Glasvegas’s “Geraldine”

glasvegas geraldine I am belatedly besotted with Glasvegass GeraldineBlimey, this passed me by. I know Glasvegas have been hotly tipped for a while, but they’ve somehow failed to register with me until recently.
“Geraldine” - released as a single a couple of months back, apparently - is one of those “ahh!” songs. You think it’s going to be a love song, see - and in a way it is I suppose, just not the kind you expect.
The verses contain the standard kind of reassurances you’d find in a ballad - helping someone in darkness, pulling them back from the edge, and so on. Then comes a line delivered in the singer’s broad Scottish accent, clear as day: “My name is Geraldine, I’m you’re social worker.”

The first time I heard that line I was kind of blown away, which sounds silly perhaps, but it’s just so refreshing when a band does something to surprise you and make you sit up and take notice. The Jesus And Mary Chain/shoegazing influence is pretty obvious on a lot of Glasvegas’s stuff, and to be honest I’ve found a lot of their songs a tad samey. But maybe it’s just that none of them are quite as concise and beautiful as “Geraldine”.
The official video has had its embedding function disabled, frustratingly, so here’s the band performing the song on BBC’s Sound show.

I love this song long time, Glasvegas are ace. Great to hear strong accents and lyrics about social workers you just weren’t expecting!
