A quick listen to a couple of the leaked tracks from Portishead’s Third
As is the way these days, tracks from Portishead’s long-awaited forthcoming third album - helpfully entitled Third - have begun appearing online. I’ve had a wee listen to a couple of the tracks, and here are my verdicts, should you give a hot damn. Click on the links to listen yourself, although who knows how long they’ll stay up.
“The Rip”: This is Portishead in “unsmokey” mode. A plucked guitar and Beth’s echoing vocals for the first couple of minutes make you wonder if they’ve gone all folky like, before a synth and beats kick in. The lyric “white horses will take me away” suggests Beth has been indulging in some equestrianism in her downtime, which is nice. The second half of the track is not a million miles away from Radiohead in their more electro moments. All in all, rather pleasing.

“Silence”: Rollicking tribal drums over strings and a typically foreboding guitar for the first couple of minutes. Something in the strings gave me the idea that this could be sampled wholesale by Wu-Tang Clan and turned into a killer piece of menacing hip-hop. When Beth does arrive two minutes in the beats fall away as she intones about “falling through changes”. Then the beats return… although it’s “very Portishead”, it’s also jarring - as if Beth is singing the melody to a different song. Maybe it’ll be a grower, or maybe it’ll need a remix.

Come on, it’s alright but it’s no Radiohead is it - and the lyrics! all very high school angst. Poor loves.
